Building Indoor Navigation Without Beacons: Our Engineering Journey at IGC Nav

How our engineering team is tackling one of the most challenging problems in smartphone navigation.

Taking Indoor Navigation Beyond GPS

Over the past several months, our engineering team at IGC Nav has been working on an ambitious challenge: developing accurate indoor navigation without relying on Bluetooth beacons or dedicated positioning infrastructure.

Most of us take GPS navigation for granted. But when we enter a shopping mall, hotel, airport or multi-storey building, conventional positioning can quickly become unreliable.

Our team set out to address this challenge through a software-driven approach that works with the capabilities of modern smartphones.

What began as IGC Loyatly and navigation development project has evolved into a much broader engineering effort. This included hiring a robotics engineer for accuracy

From Early Development to a Working Fusion Engine

One of our biggest milestones has been bringing multiple positioning technologies together into our proprietary IGC Fusion Engine.

Our team has successfully integrated core positioning capabilities and progressed into practical testing across indoor environments.

The work has involved extensive development, testing, refinement and overcoming the limitations of ordinary smartphone hardware.

We've also been exploring how navigation systems can improve positioning consistency without requiring building owners to install expensive physical infrastructure.

This is particularly important for environments such as shopping centres, hotels, airports and large commercial facilities.

The Challenge of Real-World Accuracy

Accuracy has been one of the most demanding aspects of the project. My goal set for the team is 5cm t0 30 cm indoors and on multi level.

Indoor environments are unpredictable. Different smartphones behave differently, buildings contain interference, and positioning errors can change as someone moves through a location.

Our engineering team has achieved encouraging high-precision results during selected internal tests.

However, our focus isn't simply on obtaining an impressive result once.

It's on developing a system that can deliver repeatable positioning performance across different devices, environments and navigation scenarios.

That's why we're expanding our validation process and working with advanced robotics engineering expertise to strengthen the platform further.

Developing Reusable Digital Checkpoints

Another important milestone has been our work on reusable digital checkpoints.

Our objective is to reduce the need for dedicated hardware installations while improving the positioning experience over time.

We've made progress developing this capability as part of our broader indoor navigation architecture.

It represents an important step toward making navigation systems more scalable and practical to deploy.

Moving Toward Developer Accessible Navigation

As our core technology develops, we're also working on making navigation capabilities accessible through a modular API architecture.

The idea is straightforward. And should help to fast track other dev projects

Developers should be able to focus on building their applications without needing to spend months or years researching, creating, testing and maintaining their own indoor positioning technologies.

Our engineering team continues to work on the underlying positioning challenges, platform reliability and practical integration requirements.

What's Next?

Our upcoming work includes further positioning validation, performance improvements, integration testing and continued development of our API infrastructure.

We're also looking forward to engaging with university technology departments, developer communities and talented emerging engineers through international hackathons.

These activities are part of our broader commitment to supporting engineering talent and encouraging creative problem-solving.

A Journey Worth Sharing

Building reliable indoor navigation is far more complicated than displaying a dot on a map.

It requires solving difficult engineering problems while ensuring the technology remains practical for everyday smartphones and real-world environments.

We're pleased with the progress our team has made and look forward to sharing more milestones as development continues. The whole team is excited as builders. So will keep everyone up to date.
